Like his visual artwork, Coffman's songs are metaphors expressing the internal landscape of his life.
During the early 1960's Terrence James Coffman was lead singer with the trio, "The Villagers". He performed on stage with Leo Kottke and opened as a solo act for Hoyt Axton, Donal Leese, the Chad Mitchell Trio and many of the leading folk groups and singer/songwriters of the decade. In those turbulent times, he regularly played at the old Cellar Door, Bassin's Top of the Walk and the Casino Royal in Washington DC.
In 1993 Coffman returned to the stage and recorded his first solo album. That CD, re-issued in 2007, as "GOODNIGHT BETOE" is a collection of songs composed by Stan Rogers, Kate Wolf, Michael Smith and other greats. Terrence has performed at various venues in Wisconsin such as Turner Hall, Linneman’s, The Coffee House and Cafe Carpe, and was featured on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Simply Folk" and "Hotel Milwaukee".
In 2008 he released an album of his own compositions entitled "SONGS FROM CENTER AVENUE STUDIO". It is an exceptional compilation of ballads written about family, lovers, outlaws and a dog named Blue. The songs on the CD are a companion to his series of paintings entitled “CENTER AVENUE”. Like his visual artwork, Coffman's songs are metaphors expressing the internal landscape of his life.
Coffman’s latest album "Live at the Coffee House", was recorded in Milwaukee with his friend and fellow songwriter, John Will Balsley. The CD includes several of Terry's original songs as well as his moving versions of tunes written by Bob Dylan, Kate Wolf and Tom Russell.
"Terry Coffman writes and performs story-songs with poetic lyrics on baritone and steel string acoustic guitars. His song-writing style has been compared to that of Leonard Cohen, Tom Russell and Ian Tyson." CD Baby review of "Songs from Center Avenue".
”A collection of contemporary, original and traditional folk songs. His voicing and guitar work is simply beautiful and accompanied by some of Wisconsin's most talented musicians.” CD Baby review of "Goodnight Betoe"
